Temples of Tamilnadu - 26 - Ashta Veeratta Sthalams - Part 1

In Hindu mythology, there are eight special places where it is believed that Lord Shiva vanquished various demons and exhibited acts of bravery. These places are Veeratta Sthalams. In Tamil, this is referred to as “Atta Veerattanam” (“Atta” means eight and “Veeram” means bravery). The Eight Veeratta Sthalams are –

1 Thirukandiur
பிரமன் சிரம் அரிந்தது (Brahmasiram Kandithal)
Lord Shiva plugged 1 out of 5 heads of Brahma
2 Thirukovilur
அந்தகாசுரன் அழித்தது (Andhagasuran Vadham)
Lord Shiva Killed Andhakasuran (asuran)
3 Thiruvathikai
திரிபுரம் எரித்தல் (Thiripura Samharam)
Lord Shiva destroy all three forms of land (Heaven, Earth and under land) by fire with laughing
4 Thiruppariyalur
தக்கனை அழித்தது (Dhakshayanyya nasam)
Lord Shiva executed Thakkan (Father of Lord Parvathi)
5 Thiruvirkkudi
சலந்தராசுரனை அழித்தது (Salandharan Vadham)
Lord Shiva sliced the head of Salandharan using His leg thumb finger
6 ThiruVazhuvur
யானையை உரித்தது (Gaja Samharam)
Lord Shiva tear Gajamukasuran (Monster in the form of Elephant)
7 Thirukkurukkai
காமனை எரித்தது (Kaman Dhaganam)
Lord Shiva burned Manmadhan by His Vision eye
8 Thirukadavur
காலனை உதைத்தது (Kaala Samharam)
Lord Shiva punished Yama to save Markandeya

While travelling we could not travel in that sequence due to the location of the various sthalams. We originally planned to cover all the stalams in two days but that didnt happen. Some areas were totally deserted, roads were bad and not many locals knew about the sthalams. We also covered Perumal temples in Koilure and kandiyur. Hence we travelled on route of convenience and hence had to be covered in two trips. In the second trip unlike the first one, we could cover all sthalams and some additional temples too. And it was one soul satisfying trip.

Unique features of the temple:

Once Goddess Parvati playfully closed the eye of Lord Shiva and everything became dark. The darkness took the form of the demon Andhakasura. To annihilate him Lord Shiva used a staff and is thus seen holding the same.Andhakasura is nothing but ignorance which has to be destroyed because if ignorance continues the world woud not progress righteously.

Saint Sundarar and Cheruman were proceeding to Mount Kailash to have a darshan of Lord Shiva. At that point in time ,Saint Avvaiyar was offering prayers to Lord Shiva in this temple. She too desired to reach Mount Kailash, however before they could do so and hurried with her prayers.Noticing her plight, Lord Ganesha advised her not to rush through and that he would ensure that she reaches before the others. As a thanks giving she composed the Vinayakar Agaval and sang the same.Lord Vinayaka being pleased, assumed the Viswa Rupam form and safely deposited Saint Avvaiyar in Mount Kailash, before the others.

While in the process of annihilating the demon Andhakasura, blood flowed from an injury inflicted by Lord Shiva on the head of the demon and each drop of blood was turning into a new demon and the war continued. On noticing this Goddess Parvati collected the blood in a bowl. But the blood already flowed became eight horizontal and eight vertical lines resulting in sixty four squares.Using his special powers Lord Shiva created sixty four Bhairavas. The sixty four squares became Vaastu which has gained prominence over a period of time. Some Kerala based priests perform Vastu Pooja after drawing sixty four squares on the floor during, Grihapravesham.(house warming) of a newly constructed house.

Since the Lord achieved Bhairava power here, visiting this temple will rid one from the grasp of black magic and sorcery.

This is the place where noble Tamil poet Kabilar lived and placed his life to rest undertaking a fast.  The rock on which he was sitting facing north is even now known as Kabilar hill.  From this place only, the Vel fell from the hands of Ambika.  Hence the place is known as Tiru Kai Vel – (Kai- hand and Vel a weapon).

Sri Durgai in the koshta very special since her eyes appear with white eyeballs, looking like  real eyes,  though the idol has been sculptured in black granite stone .

Lord Shiva in the temple is a swayambumurthy. The famous Vinayakar Agaval by divine poetess Avvaiyar dedicated to Vinayaka was sung in this temple. This is the place where Lord Shiva destroyed demon Andhakasura. Of the eight Veeratta sthalas, this is the second with historical importance and antiquity. Lord Shiva in the sanctum sanctorum is with Bhairava power. Those afflicted with black magic and spells will be relieved of the evils if they worship in the temple. The Vasthu Sastra widely followed in building plans now-a-days began from this place only. Planet Shukra was relieved of his curse. Saptha Madhas, Mother Maha Tripura Sundari, 64 Bhairavas and 64 Bhairavis came into being from this sacred land.

When Saint Sundarar and Cheraman were proceeding to Mount Kailash through sky, Avvaiyar was performing puja to Lord.  She was hastening to complete the pujas as she also wanted to reach Mount Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva.  Lord Vinayaka appeared before her and advised her not to be hasty.  Avvaiyar performed Ganapathi Puja chanting her noted Vinayagar Agaval and completed the puja patiently.  Lord Vinayaka took the Vishwarupa – covering both earth and heaven, took Avvayar and left her at Kailash before Sundarar and Cheraman reached the destination.  As He took a huge form, Vinayaka is praised as Peria Yanai-huge elephant.

Lord Shanmuga wanted to perform Shiva Puaja to cleanse Himself of the sin of destroying the demons.  Ambica showed the place where the Vel fell from Her hands.  Hence the place is known Tiru Kai Vel – Kai-hand and Vel a weapon.   Muruga performed His puja here and is praised by Arunagiriar in his Tirupugazh hymns.

It so happened that the world became dark when Mother Parvathi covered the eyes of Lord Shiva which are but Sun and Moon in a play.  The darkness took the form of a demon.  Andhaka means darkness and also ignorance.  Life becomes dark due to ignorance.  Lord Shiva struck the Andhaka-darkness giant on his head with a club in His hand. The head of the demon began to bleed.  Every drop of blood that fell on earth grew into a demon and war continued.  Mother Parvathi prevented the blood from falling down by collecting it in a bowl.  The blood that fell down became 8 vertical and 8 horizontal lines crosswise and thus made 64 squares.  With His power, Lord Shiva created 64 Bhairavas for each square and prevented further production of demons and blessed the Devas in the celestial world.  This later came to known as Vasthu Shanti Puja for Bhairavas.  This also personifies the destruction of ignorance leading to enlightenment.

Sri Brahma Kandeeswarar temple has an interesting story to it.  It is said that Brahma, the creator among the Trinity, originally had a fifth head on top of his four heads.  However, he became so egoistic with pride on account of his being the creator that he began to imagine he was the greatest of the gods.  Shiva then stepped in to teach Brahma a lesson.  He cut off his fifth head, the reason why Brahma a lesson.  He cut off his fifth head, the reason why Brahma has four heads now.  A chastened Brahma realized his folly, shed his arrogance, and prayed to Shiva for forgiveness.  Tirukandiyur or Kandiyur (literally, condemned) is the site where this episode is said to have taken place.

About the temple

Ravanan

Sri Harasaapa Vimochana Perumal temple is, as the name indicates, dedicated to the "Perumal (Vishnu) who redeemed Hara (Shiva)." Shiva, as explained above, had cut off Brahma's fifth head.  However, His act invited the Brahmagarthi dhosam,  a kind of taint/curse, the consequence of which was that he encountered terrible misery, with the decapitated skull stuck in His hand, and with which he had to beg for alms.  Vishnu and Lakshmi then intervened to relieve Shiva of the dhosham.  This shrine is the hallowed spot where Shiva received His remission.  It is also known as Trimurthi Kshetram, as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, appeared together here at the end of the episode.

Since Shiva was freed of His sin here, devotees who pray in this small temple will also be absolved of their sins, it is said.  The deity is in a standing posture, and is also known as Sri Brighunathar.  His divine consort, in a separate shine, is Sri Kamalavalli Thayar.  There are sub-shrines here for, among others, Lord Narasimha, Andal, etc.  The Pushkarni, holy tank, is known as Kapaala theertham.  The Rajagopuram of this temple has three tiers, and is shorter than that of the Shiva temple opposite.  The Rajagopuram of Sri Brahma Kandeeswarar temple is devoid of embellishments, while that of Sri Harasaapa Vimochana Perumal temple is crowded with depictions from the various puranas.

Those seeking wedding boon offer Wedding garlands. Some offer their child in adoption for child boon and perform Rudrabishekam. Those suffering from diseases of serous nature, perform Conch Abishek (Sangabishekam) for cure. Patients facing heart related problems conduct the Mrutyunjaya Homa (conquering the God of Death). Many devotees with staunch faith had survived even serious heart attacks. Devotees perform abishek to Mother Abhiramai with sandal, rice flour, cosmetic powders, oil, milk, curd, green coconut, Panchamirtham, lime juice, honey. Women scared of the safety of their Mangal Sutra (fear of widowhood) use to place a new mangal sutra at the feet of Ambika wear it, leaving the old one at Her feet. Many undertake Annadhanam-feeding. Many contribute liberally for the renovation of the temple. They also offer Sari to Mother.

Lord Mahavishnu wished to perform Shiva Puja before serving the nectar to Devas. According to rules Shiva Puja should be performed along with Ambica.  Lord Mahavishnu took off all His ornaments to represent Mother Ambica.  She rose from these ornaments.  Completing the Shiva Puja, He served the nectar to Devas.  It is believed that the ornament of Lord Vishnu is the home of Mother Mahalakshmi.  As Ambica-Abirami was born of the jewels, Vishnu is praised as the Mother of Ambica also, though generally She is widely praised as the younger Sister (Yoga Maya) of Lord Mahavisnu.

The wonderful mercy of Mother Abhirami is evident from an event that saved her devotee from capital punishment.

Subramanyar

While in deep prayer in the temple with his mind set on the graceful face of Ambica, Her devotee Subramanian, when enquired about the Thithi of the day by king Sarfoji, said it was a full moon day though it was a new moon day.  The king said that if he failed to prove that it was full moon day, he would be hanged.

Unfazed by the order of the king, his faith completely at the feet of Ambica, Subramaniam began singing the Her glory in 100 verses in Andhadhi poetic style.  Andhadhi – first and last – that is the last word of the preceding verse will be the first word in the next verse.  This is generally sung in 100 verses.  When Subramaniam was singing the 79th verse, Mother Abhirami threw Her Thadanga – ear rings in the air which shone as a full moon.  This event is celebrated in the temple on the New Moon day of Tamil Thai month – January-February.  Mother Abhirami grants darshan from her flowerful palanquin.  These hundred songs are now celebrated as Abhirami Andhadhi chanted by devotees as a daily routine.  On this festival day, this is chanted with an Arati for each song.  When the 79th song is chanted a powerful electric lamp is switched on representing the full moon appearing from Her Thadangas-ear rings. Devotee crowd is naturally huge on this day.

Sage Mrigandu and his wife Maruthuvathi were praying to Lord Shiva for child.  The sage performed severe penance.  Lord said that the sage couple would have a son with all wisdom and noble characters but his life would too short spanning just 16 years. He was named Markandeya.  When he entered the age of 16, his parents were sad.  Knowing the problem, Markandeya took a pilgrimage to all Shiva Sthalas.  He came to Tirukadayur.  This was the 108th temple of his pilgrimage.  That also happened to his day of destiny.  While he was praying to Lord, Yama directly came there to take his life.  Seeing Yama, Markandeya embraced Lord Amirtha Kadeswara with all his might.  When Yama threw his rope on Markandeya, it fell and covered Lord also, who in all fury hit him and destroyed him with His trident.  Turning to Markandeya, Lord said that he would ever be 16 only without death.

As Yama was no more, there was no death in the earth.  Mother Earth could not bear the amassed weight of beings living long without an end.  She appealed to Lord Shiva telling her difficulty.  Lord shed his anger and restored Yama to life in this sacred bhoomi.  Lord is praised as Kala Samhara Murthy.  His left leg is on Adishesha the divine serpent.  He is holding His trident on Yama underneath.

Nearby is Gundodhara dragging Yama with a rope.  But Yama is not visible during darshan.  During the puja time, when the peeta is opened, we can see Yama.  The darshan of Lord with trident is called Samhara style and that with Yama is called Anugraha style.  Devotees can worship Lord Amirthakadeswarar in both forms.  Mother Balambika as a little girl appears with two hands with Mothers Lakshmi and Saraswathi nearby.

As the Akash Rahasya – sacred philosophy – in Chidambaram, there is a Yantra in the right wall of the shrine called Tirukadayur Rahasyam.  Worshipping Lord Papa Kareswarar and the presiding Lord, people also worship this yantra for longevity.
Yama appears in the shrine of Kalasamhara Murthy in a worshipping posture with his buffalo vahan nearby.

Markandeya brought Ganga water for his Shiva puja.  To facilitate his Shiva Puja, Lord made Ganga spring in a well near the Brahmmapureeswarar temple adjacent to Thirukadavur cremation ground.  Markandeya was happy to use this water for the abishek of Lord.  Even today, this is the water used for abishek in the temple.  Devotees are not allowed to bathe in this spring.  The Ganga spring appeared on the Aswathi star day in Thai month (January-February). Devotees are allowed to bathe here only on this day each year.

It is said that a jasmine flower belonging to Pinjilam variety also came along the Ganga spring which blossoms throughout the year used only for the archana of Lord.  Others cannot use it.  It is also said that archana with one flower is equal to an archana with 1008 flowers.

Poornabishekam for those completing 100 years, Kanakabishekam (90 Years old), Sathabishekam (80 years), Beemaratha Shanthi (70 years) and Manivizha (60 years) are performed for longevity with Ayush Homam.  In such celebrations 16 Kalasas and nine varieties of corns and pulses are placed invoking the presence of nine planets. After the rituals, the water in the Kalasas-pots is poured on the person and his wife as Prasad abishek by their relatives.  This washes away any sin attached with such aged ones.  Then they have to worship Lord Brahmma Pureeswarar whose temple is near the Thirukadvur cremation ground.  For this celebration no day, date and auspicious time formalities are observed as they take place in the presence of Lord in the temple.

The symbol of the rope thrown around Markandeya along with Linga, is still on the Linga which would be visible during abishek times.  The evening pujas in the temple begin with Lord Adhi Vilva Vana Nathar.  Here is the cave tunnel used by Markandeya to bring the Ganga water for Lord’s abishekam.

Devotees, according to tradition, begin their worship with Lord Papa Kareswarar worshipped by sage Agasthya and Lord Punya Kareswarar worshipped by Sage Pulasthya and proceed to other shrines.  There is a shrine for Lord Punya Kareswarar.  Papa Kareswara temple is opposite this shrine with holes on the wall.

The scar caused by Yama’s rope is visible on the Shivalinga.  The idol of Lord Kalasamharamurthi is made of copper expressing all anger with trident upside down on Yama, hitting him by the right leg and facing south.

Many Siddhas were living around this holy place, Pambatti Siddha being prominent.
There is no Navagraha shrine in the temple.  Those performing pujas for Navagrahas the nine planets, offer it to Lord Kalasamharamurthi only.

Of the celebrated 63 Saivite Nayanmars, Kaari Nayanar and Kungiliakalaya Nayanar attained salvation in this sacred land.  Subramanian the author of Abhirami Andhadhi then known as Abhirami Pattar was also a native of this place.

Lord Brahmma went to Kailash to have the Gnana Upadesa (wisdom learning).  Lord Shiva gave the seeds of Vilwa tree to Brahmma and asked him to sow them in earth in various places.  Where the seed germinates within one hour into a tree shall be venue of teaching, said Lord Shiva.  It happened in Thirukadayur.   Shiva the teacher of Brahmma is worshipped as Adhi Vilwa Vana Nather in the temple having His own shrine.

The Devan began to consume the nectar without offering prayers to Lord Vinayaka who simply hid the pot.  They realized their folly and prayed to Vinayaka, got it from Him and placed it in this Thirudayur for Shiva Puja.  When opened it was Shiva Linga.  As Lord Shiva appeared here as a Swayamnu Linga from the Amirtha-nectar pot He is worshipped as Amirtha Kadeswarar.

About Two songs on the beauty of  lord murugan present in this temple is being sanged in the epic of Thirupugzhal  by Arunaigrinathar.

The tradition of breaking the coconut in the ground ( " sitharuthengai ") has came from this temple only .

The temple is in the form a Ratha as it is believed that the lord came by Ratha.

The temple garbhagiragha's vimanam is build in such a way that the shadow of the vimanam will not fall in the ground at any season of the year.

The hyms " UZAVARAM " by thirunavaukarasar was launched from this temple.

The temple was constructed and build before the Tanjore brahadeshwarar temple build. The great king Raja rajacholan had got an idea to build the tanjore temple after seeing this temple

It is believed that the Temple was build 2000 years before.

The place and the temple are closely linked with the history of Saint Tirunavukkarasar.  Though born to Saivite  parents and brought up by his Shiva devotee sister Thilagavathy, Marul Neekiar – that was his baptism name – embraced Jainism and rose to Guruhood there with the name Dharumasenar.  His sister, a staunch Shiva devotee, dedicated herself to the service of Lord Shiva by maintaining the temple, prayed to the Lord seeking her brother’s home coming to Saivism.

Lord Shiva caused a severe stomach pain to Appar.  None in the Jain camp could cure him.  He came to sister Thilagavathy, fell at her feet for relief.  The affectionate sister took the brother to Veerattaneswarar shrine, chanted the Panchakshara-five letters-Na Ma Shi Vaa Ya – and put the sacred ash on his forehead.  Appar also consumed the ash and was miraculously cured instantly of his deadly stomach pain.  Out came spontaneously Appar’s first hymn called Kodhil Neediya Tirupathigam beginning with the line “Kootru Aayinavaru Vilakka hileer”.  Pleased with his poetic skill, Lord Shiva honoured Appar with the title Tiru Navukku Arasar-Tirunavukkarasar meaning king of tongues.

People decorate the entrance of sanctum sanctorum with garlands (Nilamalai) and do traditional offers as Pottu Kattudhal, offer Mangal Sutra to Mother, perform Trishadi archana containing 300 or Sahasranama archana with 1008 names of the Lord, break coconuts, perform abishek to Lord with curd, fruit juices, green coconut, panchamirta a mixture of five ingredients, scented powders, gingely oil, sandal, rosewater sacred ash vilwa leaves etc. and abishek with conches and Kalasas. Abishek is performed to Mother with turmeric powder. Devotees offer vastras to Mother and Lord. They also feed the visiting devotees.

Indira the king of Devas, Lords Brahmma and Vishnu, Pandavas the five brothers, Saptha Rishis (seven sages), Vayu the God of Wind, Varuna the God of Rain, Yama the God of Death came to this temple in their chariots to worship Lord Veerattaneswarar.  Hence, the temple is designed as Rath.  Thanjavur Peria Koil (BigTemple) Vimana was designed after this temple by Rajaraja in the temple he built at Thanjavur.  The temple is designed with such mathematical accuracy by the Pallavas that the shade of the temple does not fall on the ground.  This is the place from where Lord Shiva destroyed the three lokas-Tripuras - simply by His boisterous laughter, without the aide of any weapon or army.

The temple has many firsts.  It is here that the Lord destroyed the three great evils – arrogance, fate and illusion.  Thevaram hymns were uttered first here.  All Shivagama puja codes were formulated from this temple.  Car festival and design of cars were drafted from this place.  This is the only temple that is adored in great number of Thevaram hyms, the divine Tamil hymns of three saints-Gananasambandar, Appar and Sundarar- came to delight the devotees and taken as scriptures by later scholars from this place.  The sculpture depicting the wedding of Shiva-Parvathi is behind the presiding deity.  The sanctum sanctorum and the Mandap are in Rath (Ther in Tamil) shape.

10 day festival for Appar-Tirunavukkarasar is very devotionally celebrated in April-May.  10 day Vaikasi (May-June) Visakam Brahmmotsavam includes car festival and Tripura Samhara.  Saint Tirunavukkarasar made his Uzhavaram, an instrument with a sharp edge fixed with a stick for removing the bushes on the way to Shiva temples in this sacred land.  It is also noteworthy that the Thevaram hymns of the three saints contain more mention about Tripura Samhara episode.  Lord of the temple purifies all His devotees from the three great basic evils polluting the human mind.  This is also the land where Lord granted darshan to Appar in Wedding form, hence weddings are conducted in the temple.

Mother Periyanayaki shrine is in right of that of Lord.  Those facing delays in wedding pray here for early good results.  The devotee should bow down while wearing the vibhuti-sacred ash.
Three wicked demons, Tharukakshan, Kamalakshan and Vidyunmali performed severe penance on Lord Brahmma and obtained powerful boons that would keep them ever alive without death.  With this boon, they began to harass the Devas and others.  All of them appealed to Lord Shiva for protection.  Lord Shiva made earth His Rath, Sun and Moon the wheels, Brahmma the charioteer and the Devas His army.  He made a bow of the Meru Mount, Vasuki the serpent the chord, Vishnu the bow with Agni (fire) the sharp point and mounted on the Rahth.  Suddenly, the axis of the Rath broke.  Immediately, prayers were offered to Lord Vinayaka for the remedy.  Lord began the March.

Devas accompanying the Lord thought that Lord would win the war with their help only.  Realizing their pride, Shiva used no weapons on the enemies.  He simply laughed at them.  A fire ball came out of His laughter and reduced the demons to ashes. Realizing their folly, Devas bowed down their heads in shame.  The arrogance of both the demons and the Devas were destroyed simultaneously by the Lord.

Lord pardoned two demons and made them His security guards-dwarapalakas.  One became player of his Kudamuzha instrument.  This is the story celebrated as Tiripura Samharam.

Unique features of the Temple:

This temple is one of the Panchakanna (Krishnaranya) Kshetrams. Kannan refers to Krishna, the avatar of Vishnu, while pancha means five and Kshetrams refers to holy places. Four of the five temples are situated in Chola Nadu, in modern times, in the region surrounding Kumbakonam and Nagapattinam and one of them in Nadu Nadu. Krishna is not the presiding deity in any of the temples. The processional deity, Krishna, led to the derivation of the names of these places.

As per Hindu legend, Vishnu appeared to the mudhal azhwars (first three azhwars) at Thirukkoilur.

The temple plays a special part in Vaishnavism as it is where the first three Azhwars sang the first three Thiruvandadhis compiled in Nalayira Divya Prabandam, the Vaishnava canon. Thirumangai Azhwar, another Azhwar saint also revered the deity in his verses compiled in Nalayira Divya Prabandam. Thus this temple has the fame of the three Alwars singing about the lord at the same time.

Poet Kapilar is believed to have found suitable grooms for king Pari's daughter Angavai and Sangavai at this place and set himself up in fire.

15 day Panguni Brahmmotsavam in March-April with Sri Pushpavalli Thayar Oonjal on Friday drawing huge crowd and Masi Magam in February-March, Lord visiting Cuddalore carried on the shoulders of devotees are the main festivals of the temple. Other festivals are Purattasi Pavithra Utsav and Navarathri in September-October; Chithirai Sri Rama Navami, Sri Ramanuja Jayanthi and Vasanth Utsav in April-May; Vaikasi Visaka Garuda Seva, Nammazhwar Sattrumurai in May-June; Aani Periazhwar Sattrumurai in June-July; Aadi Thiruvadipooram, Andal Utsav in July-August; Avani Sri Jayanthi, Uriyadi utsav in August-September; Aipasi Mudalazwar Sattrumurai, 10 day Sri Manavala Mamunigal utsav in October-November; Karthikai Kaisika Ekadasi; Tirukarthikai in November-December; Margazhi Rapathu, Pagal Pathu, Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January. Besides the above, important days as Pongal-Makar Snkranti, Deepavali, Tamil and English New Year days are also observed with special pujas to Lord Trivikrama.

Rajagopuram

This is one of the 108 Holy Divya Desas of Perumal. Presiding deity Perumal is made of Tharu-wood. So tall a Perumal is no where in Tamilnadu temples. Lord Krishna made of Salagrama stone is gracing devotees from a separate shrine.

Lord Trivikrama Perumal graces the devotees from the sanctum under the Sri Chakra Vimana.  Lord Venugopala plays the Kshetra Balaka role.  There are shrines in the prakara for Lords Venugopala, Lakshmi Narayana, Lakshmi Raghava, Lakshmi Narasimha, Sri Rama and Sri Veera Anjaneya, Mother Sri Andal and Shukracharya, the Guru of Asuras.

The tower of the temple is the third tallest in the state, the first at Sri Rangam, the second at Srivilliputhur.  This is a 11 tier 192 feet tall tower.  The temple area covers 5 acres.  Even after crossing the main tower, there are residential parts.  The place is praised as Nadu Nadu Tirupathi.  There is a temple for Lord Vamana Murthy in Tirukakarai in Kerala.  Vamanamurthi graces here from behind the presiding deity.

The object of Lord in His Vamanavatara-Trivikrama Avatara was to teach that wealth of even great kings should not land them pride and arrogance.  He took the Vishwarupa, measured the space with His right Leg and the Earth with the right.  He stood too tall touching both earth and sky.  In His extreme delight to bless Emperor Mahabali, the illustrious grandson of Prahladha who was instrumental for His Narasimha Avtar, Lord appears here with the conch in the right hand and the discus in the left-vice-versa.  This is described as His teaching wisdom to devotees.  His posture-left leg on the earth and the right in the sky-appears as if He is asking where to place His foot for the third foot of land due from Mahabali as promised to Him.   Lord Brahmma is worshipping the foot in the sky.

This is a very popular story of Lord Vishnu as a Vamana seeking three foot step land from Mahabali, which he could not afford as Lord had covered both earth and sky with two feet itself leaving no space for the third.

Sage Mrigandu wanted to have this Vishwarupa Darshan of Lord and approached Lord Brahmma for His advice.  Brahmma suggested that the sage go to Krishna Kshetra (now Tirukovilur) on the banks of Krishnabadra River to realize his wish.  The sage along with his wife Mitravathi came to this place and performed severe penance for the darshan of Lord.

Ramanujar

Lord came to their abode in the guise of an old Brahmin and begged for food.  They didn’t have even a single grain of rice to offer.  The sage turned to his wife.  Mitravathi went in, took a bowl in hand and prayed to Lord Narayana to fill the bowl with food if she was the chaste wife of the sage.  The bowl was full of delicious food.  Pleased with their penance, Perumal granted His Vishwarupa darshan to the sage couple.
This is the holy place where the first three Azhwars-Poigai Azhwar, Boodhathazhwar and Peyazhwar- met together incidentally by the grace of Lord.  It was night raining heavily.  Poigai Azhwar sought a place in the Ashram of Sage Mrigandu.  He was shown a place to rest down.  After a little while, Boodhathazwar came to the same place for a space.  The first Ahwar shared the space just sufficient for two to sit.  The third Azhwar-Peyahwar too came there.  The two shared the space with him sufficient only for standing.  Suddenly, they were pressed due to the presence of a fourth comer who was but Perumal Himself granting His darshan.

The songs sung by the three Azhwars how they were blessed with darshan of Lord as lighting a lamp to dispense the rainy darkness, is chanted even now by the devotees while lighting lamps in their houses in mornings and evenings.

The Three Azhwars attained salvation in this holy land.  Lord Perumal is praised as Ulagu Alanda Perumal-Ulagalanda Perumal as He sought a small piece of land measuring just three feet.  The idol is made of wood in a standing posture, the tallest in the country.  Against the tradition, Perumal is holding the conch in the right hand and the discus in the left.  Of the 108 Divya Desas of Perumal, this is the only temple with Swayambu Vishnu Durga.  This is an important kshetra for the Vishnavas and Hindus in general in the Nadu Nadu region.  The tower of the temple is third tallest in the state scaling 192 feet.  Shukracharya, (Venus in the zodiac sign) Guru of the Asuras, has a place in the temple.

It is noteworthy that the holy scriptures Nalayira Divya Prabandam containing 4000 verses in praise of Lord Vishnu sung by 12 Alzhwars from time to time at various places, began from Tirukovilur.

It is mostly in Shiva temples, we see Mother Vishnu Durga in the prakaras. In Tirukovilur temple, Lord and His beloved Sister Durga (Maya the feminine form of Lord Vishnu) are in shrines nearby to each other.  Tirumangai Azhwar who generally praises Lord alone in his hymns had made a devotional line to Mother Durga in one of his verses.  People pray to Mother Vishnu Durga during Rahu Kalams on Tuesdays and Fridays for relief from the adverse aspects of planets.

There is a 40 feet tall Garuda Pillar with a small temple built on it opposite Perumal shrine.  It is believed that Garuda Bhagwan is worshipping Lord from this temple.

Of the Pancha Krishna Sthalas – Five great temples of Lord Krishna- 1)Tirukovilur, 2) Tirukannapuram, 3) Tirukannangudi, 4) Tirukannamangai and 5) Kabisthalam, Tirukovilur is the first.  Lord Krishhna in this temple, made of Salagrama stone, graces the devotees from a shrine on the right side of the Gopuram entrance.  The devotees must begin the worship from this shrine and pass to the presiding Perumal only then.  Great Vaishnava Acharya Manavala Mamunigal also had rendered many hymns in praise of Lord Perumal.

According to scriptures and Tamil literatures. Sage Parasurama and Sage Agasthya had performed penance at Tirukovilur.  The puranic age Krishnabadra River is flowing now in the name of Thenpennai.  Before butter (Vennai in Tamil) melts, Pennai (the name of the river) melts, is an old saying.

Emperor Mahabali, though good natured, ever helpful to those in need, had a desire that none should exceed him in status and fame.  To realize this aim, he conducted a great yajna headed by his Guru Shukracharya.  Lord thought to bring down his pride.  He took the form of dwarf, came to the Yajna field and sought three foot steps of land (three steps by His foot) as dhan (charity).  Guru Shukracharge sensed some mischief in the dwarf and understood that the visitor was none other than Lord Vishnu.  He vehemently warned Mahabali and did his best to prevent his promise.  Mahabali did not relent.  He was only keen to keep up his word to dwarf and offered His wish.  Lord took His Vishwarupa, measured the earth by one foot step and the Akasha by the second step and there was no place for the third step and asked Mahabali for the third.  Mahabali gracefully accepted his inability and offered his head for the third.  Lord placed his head on Mahabali and demanded that he solemnize the dhan with water from his right hand.  Mahabali took the water bowl to confirm his promise but Shuracharya took the form of a bee and blocked the hole of the bowl from releasing the water.  Lord Vishnu took a grass piece, put it on the bowl hole that blinded the Guru.  Mahabali was pressed by the Lord to the Padala Loka and taken later with Him, goes the story.

Any devotee who would indeed like to read and enjoy this Vamanavathara-Trivikrama story of Lord, should read Sriman Narayaneeyam by Narayana Pattadri and Srimad Bhagavatha by Sage Veda Vyasa.  They will have to close the book only unwillingly.

It is believed that the original temple was built by Bali Maharaja. The present structure of the temple is built by the Chola kings of the 8th century. Vijayanagar kingsand Madurai Nayakas added a few enclosures to the temple. The temple is situated on a one acre land between two rivers and has a three tiered raja gopuram facing east. There are two prakaram. The main sanctum can be reached after passing through two mantapas -Garuda mantapa and Mahamantapa. Both of them are covered with intricately carved pillars depicting various pastimes of the God.

Lord Perumal appears in a standing posture facing east.  The Vimana above the sanctum is called Kamalakruthi Vimana.  Lord Shiva and sage Agasthya had the darshan of the Lord in this temple

As Perumal granted relief to Lord Shiva (Hara) of a curse, He is named Hara ShabaVimochana Perumal – Hara-Shiva, Shaba-curse, Vimochana-relief.  This is one of the 108 Divya Desas of Perumal.  According to scriptures, the temple was built by Emperor Mahabali.  Lord Shiva has His temple here and is praised as Kandeeswarar.  The place has the reputation of being honoured as Mum Moorthy (three Lords) Sthala.  Since there is no temple for Brahmma, He has His place in Kandeeswarar temple gracing with Mother Maha Saraswathi.   The author of the celebrated book ‘Sri Krishna Leela Tharangini’ belongs to Tirupoonthuruthi near Kandiyur, a stauch devotee of this temple.
Saint Tirumangai Azhwar compares the glory of the Lord of this temple in his hymns with Perumals of Kanchi and Koiladi – Kanchi Perumal, Koviladi Perumal

Lord Shiva has five faces praised as Eeshana, Tatpurusha, Agora, Vamadevam and Satyojatham.  Lord Brahmma too had five faces earlier.  Therefore, he developed pride that He was equal to Lord Shiva.  Angry Shiva simply plucked the centre head of Brahmma.  The head stuck to his hand and did not fall down.  Lord Shiva, to wash off the Brahmmahathi sin wandered places with the head of Brahmma.  Finally, the head fell at a place.  Lord Vishnu was present there.  This is that place where Lord Hara Shaba Vimochana Perumal blesses the devotees with Pooranavalli Thayar-Kamalavalli Nachiar.

Being the place where Shiva himself got salvation from his curse, it is believed that all our curses will go away if one visits this temple and offers sincere prayers here.

This is also known as the Pancha Kamala Kshetram (Lord Kamalanathan, Goddess Kamalavalli, Kamala Pushkarani, Kamala Vimanam and Kamala Kshetram)
