Lame Nadha Sharma and his wife Anavidyambikai could not reach this place for the Thula Snanam in cauvery before the expiry of the 30 days time of Aipasi. When they prayed to Lord Shiva worshipping him, He directed them to have the bath before sunrise and they will have full benefit of the Tula Snanam.  Following this, the tradition of this bath continues even today on the first day of Karthikai month.  Since the Lord fixed the bath time for the couple, it is called Mudavan Muzhukku meaning the bath of the Differently abled.. The couple then merged with the Lord.

When the mother when she ignored Lord and attended Daksha’s yajna was cursed to become a peacock, she came to this place and performed severe penance to get back to Her Lord.   Pleased, Lord Shiva appeared before here as a Peacock Himself and performed the Mayura Thandavam and hence he is Mayuranathar. The  Mother was restored to Her original form.

The temple shows the significance of fasting on Ekadasi.   The king Ambarishan was in the process of completing the 100th Ekadasi – Dwadasi.

As usual, the Devas scared of Ambarisha an reaching an exalted status through this fasting and to negate his efforts, they approached Durvasa who likes to test people.

The practice for the king was to complete the Ekadasi fastingand have his food. So He visited the King and informed him that he will be back for food after his snanam so that they can eat together. The sage purposely delayed and the the king consulted learned men in his court who advised that if he takes a few drops of water, that would finish the fasting process. When the king complied and finished his fast, Durvasa created a demon to kill him and Ambarisha sought refuge at the Lord’s feet. The ghost vanished and Sage durvasa to learned his folly and sought the Lord’s pardon.
