Temples of Tamilnadu - 42 - 5 Temples Worshipped by Pandava Prince Bheema

There are five Shiva temples on the banks of the Manimutharu  river worshipped by Bheema

The five Shiva temples are situated on the banks of the Manimutharu  where Bheema worshipped.Lord Shiva are Sukavaneswarar temple in Salem, Karapuranathar temple in Uthamachozhapuram, Veeratteeswarar temple in Pilloor, Bheemeswarar temple in Mavureddi (Paramathi), and Tiruveneeswarar temple in  Nanjai Idayaru. Worshipping at all the five temples within a day  is considered to bring good fortune and happiness in life.

when Bheema, the Pandava prince was going around through the forest  for hunting, a strong rhinoceros thought he was intruding his territory and challenged him. Since Bhima could not convince him of no such intention, he started fleeing.  Enroute he prayed Lord Shiva in 5 places (.Sukavaneswarar in Salem, Karapuranathar in Uthamachozhapuram, Veeratteeswarar in Pilloor, Bheemeswarar in Mavureddi (Paramathi), and Tiruveneeswarar in  Nanjai Idayaru). Ultimately Bhima could not defeat  the animal and prayed that let his body break into 2 pieces if he had evil intentions. The rhinoceros turned into Lord Shiva and blessed him.

Another legend is that Bheema was very proud of his physical power and Lord Shiva wanted to teach him humility and hence came in the form of a rhinoceros.
