As the name goes Peacock is connected with this sthalam and considered equal to Kasi in greatness.

Aduthurai is river bank and Mayil is peocock and the name means the river bank where Peacock rejoice through their dance.  This place which was Mayuram  earlier later became Mayavaram and now to Myladuthurai..

When Parvati was humiliated in the Dakshan Yagna which she attended against Shiva’s advice, she returned to Kailasam and was cursed to be born as a peahen.

When Parvati, as a peahen, did penance at Mylapore and Mayuram, for relief, Lord Siva graced here as a peacock and accepted her penance in addition to rendering the Mayura tandavam here.

When Goddess Parvathi was undergoing penance here she gave protection to a peacock and hence has been named Abhayambikai.

All the celestials took bath in Ganga and Yamuna  when punished by Siva for attending Daksha’s yajna to purify themselves. When the rivers approached Lord Siva, they were asked to take a dip in the Kaveri river to wash of their sins, which was the Tamil month of Aipasi or the Tula (October-November). It is therefore a belief that they do so every year, and known as Tula Snanam, where people also take a dip in the Kaveri river in the current day.

Nada Sarma who was lame and his wife Anavidayambikai wanted to bathe here during Tula Snanam, but could reach only on the first day of Kartikai (November-December). On his prayers, Lord Siva extended the time till the early morning of the first day of Kartikai for the Tula Snanam and this day is celebrated as Mudavan Muzhukku (dip of the lame).

Nada Sarma became whole and along with his wife merged with the Lord.

When Sambandar was on his way to this temple from Keelayur temple temple, Kaveri was overflowing and looking for some one to help, he cried aloud Is there anyone to help cross the river. When a hunter came and guided Sambandar to cross the river on foot, on reaching the bankthe river parted and they could cross it. Once on the other side, when the hunter disappeared, Sambandar realised that it was Lord Siva who had come as the hunter and since the Lord showed the way to other side, He is called Thurai Kaattum Vallar (who showed the bank).

A Brahmin Arulvithan, a ardent devotee of Siva, would every day bring fresh flowers for worship to this temple. One day, the river was full and without any body to help, he started crossing it on foot with the flowers held above his head. Struggling against current, he managed to reach the shore the other side. Lord Siva pleased by his devotion, blessed him by allowing the steps to the river bank rise.

A demon called Kapithan was relieved of his brahmahathi dosham after worshipping here.

Vizhal is the sthala vriksham of this temple. The place gets its name Vizhal nagar or Tiru Vizhal Nagar from the Vizhal (a type of plant / grass) that grew in abundance, which corrupted over time  Tiruvila Nagar

Devotees worship here to be relieved of all their troubles through a prarthana by tying the leaves of the Vizhal plant.

After the incidents of Tripura Dahanam, when the Gods including the Devas, Brahma and Vishnu visited Mayiladuthurai to worship,  Siva as a hunter led them to Moovalur. He is known as  Marga Sahayeswarar  as after showing them the Lingam emerged there, He disappeared, thereby showing the right path

King Nirmalan was affected by a chronic skin disease and while searching for a cure, sighed a Rishi playing the Veena who taught him a mantra to invoke Lord Vishnu when recited daily. In doing so, he heard Vishnu’s voice asking him to travel along the bank of the river Kaveri and Siva as Margasahayeswarar would guide him, and would be cured at the place his body becomes gold. Lord Shiva guided him to Kozhikuthi and he was cured. He was late known as Pippala Maharishi.

Aadi Margasahayeswarar’s shrine is in the southern part of the outer prakaram, assumed to be the original Lingam connected with the sthala puranam. Soundaranayaki and Mangalambigai – unusually are two ammans with separate shrines. There are 4 Nandis leading up to the garbhagriham while the fifth Nandi is in front of the moolavar.

Parvati had to take a fierce form as Kali / Durga to kill Mahishasuran and then worshipped at Punnagavanam, to regain Her original form. This incident forms a part of the temple’s annual festival.

This place was Punnagavanam, full of Punnai trees, which is also the sthala vriksham of this temple. Since Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra worshipped Siva here the place came to be called Moovarur which got  corrupted to Moovalur.
