The two gate keepers of Sri Vaikuntam were cursed to be bornn as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu.
The elder brother Hiranyakasipu did severe penance for many years and wanted a death less life boon. Since Brahma Deva said that is not possible for every being born is destined to die, He advised him to ask for something else. The Asura then stipulated that he will neither be killed by human beings or animals, in the earth or in the sky, or by any instruments wet or dry and in or out of the house.
Hiranya then relentlessly tortured the Rishis and Devas and compelled them to pay obeisance to him. He also ordained that they should offer prayers to him as "HIRANYAYA NAMA" instead of "OM NAMO NARAYANAYAH". Nobody dared disobey him and hence prayed Lord Vishnu for relief from his cruelty.

Hiranya’s son Prahaladha who was a devotee of Mahavishnu and hence disobeyed his father and pray to him. Not only that he made other people invoke Narayan’s name and praise. This made the father angry.
The angry father, determined to kill him made various efforts through his soldiers, through trampling by elephants, feeding poison and throw off a cliff but was saved by the Lord.
When Hiranyakasipu asked Prahaladha with anger as to where his God is, He replied saying that He is the present everywhere including You and me.
Hiranyakasipu showing a pillar asked "Is your God here?", and when he heard Prahalada say "Without doubt”, knocked the pillar using his mace.
Hiranyakasipu showing a pillar asked "Is your God here?", and when he heard Prahalada say "Without doubt”, knocked the pillar using his mace.
Immediately the pillar split and Lord Sri Narasimha appeared in an unusual form, which was neither human nor animal but a combination of both and furious.
Narasimha dragged
Hiranya towards the entrance of the palace, sat on the entrance steps, placed
him on his thighs and tore Hiranya's chest by his nails, at the time of sunset.
Thus he was killed in accordance with his boon.
While everyone around was scared to approach the fiery Narasimha, Prahaladha prayed through his prayers calmed him who blessed him and disappeared in the form of a Saligramam.
In Ramayana, while replacing the sanjeevini and returning, Hanuman brought the Saligramam in which Sri Narasimhaswamy disappeared.
When the sun rose, Sri Hanuman got down to the earth to perform Santhayavanthanam at Kamalalayam near Sri Mahalakshmi's Thapovanam. For performing the morning duties & Santhia Vanthanam he placed the Saligramam near the tank of Kamalalayam.
After he finished his duties Hanuman tried to lift the Saligramam but was unable to. Hanuman prayed to the Lord when the Saligramam grew as a rock and then a celestial voice ordained that it will stay there and that he should go back to Lanka and serve the Lord. He was asked to come here after Ramavatharam and pray in Kaliyuga. Hence he is enshrined at Namakkal worshipping Lord Narasimha.
Mahalakshmi's prayer here calmed Narasimhaswamy He blessed Mahalakshmi and thence she came to be known as Namagiri Lakshmi.
