Temples of Tamilnadu - 34 & 35 - Saptha Karaikanda Sthalangal & Saptha Kailaya Sthalangal

Mother Uma while proceeding to Tiruvannamalai from Kancheepuram, stayed in a place called Vazhaipandal and wanted to do Shiva Pooja. Since she could not get one, she decided to make one with sand and asked Muruga to provide Her water to make the Linga.

Murugan threw His vel (spear) towards the west and water came in red color from the hills there. Seven Gandharvas Puthirandan, Puruhudan, Pandurangan, Bodhavan, Bodhan, Koman and Vaman  who were cursed by Lord Shiva to be born in earth as rishis were doing penance to be relived off their curse. They were  hurt by the spear and made the water red with their blood. While they got relieved off their curse, Murugan had to bear the sin of killing them.
