The festival Sura Samhara is not followed here, because the Lord appears in pleasant mood without war plans. After the samharam, He came to Tiruthani with a joyous mood and hence the war festival is not celebrated here.  Instead, on this day, flowers weighing 1000 Kilograms are used to please the Lord.

Against tradition, In the place of peacock, the elephant is the vahan-vehicle for Muruga facing other side.  When Indira offered Iravadham the white elephant as the wedding gift to Deivanai, the prosperity of Devalokam began to shrink.  Indira prayed to allow the elephant in the shrine to turn the other side so that due to its impact, Devalokam would prosper. Since Lord Muruga gracefully obliged,  the elephant faces the other side.

Daughters of Lord Vishnu, Amudavalli and Sundaravalli performed penance seeking Lord Muruga’s hands.  Deivanai under the care of Indira while valli under Nambirajan realized their aim and became consorts of Lord Muruga.  As they wished to show that they were one, took the form of Gajavalli.  Gajavalli holds the Lotus in the Her right hand attributed to Valli and the Neelotpala flower in the left representing Deivanai and graces from Her parrot vehicle.

Here the  Devotees do not put this sandal Prasad on their forehead but dissolve in water and consume it as it is believed that would cure them from any disease.  This Prasad is offered only on festival days.

Lord Bhairava graces in temple with 4 dogs representing 4 Vedas.   While one dog is behind Bhairava, other three are around the Peeta.  Those aspiring to achieve academic excellence pray here.

During the final puja Lord Murugan graces on many many Vaahanams.  A Muslim gentleman had the luck of being graced by Lord Muruga in this temple and hencea Muslim devotee plays the drum even today during the procession. It is said that there is a scar on Muruga caused by clash with the demon which the Lord gracefully accepted.  Tiruthani is the place where Devendra gifted Iravadham the white elephant to Deivani as wedding gift.  Hence, there is elephant before the sanctum sanctorum in the place of the peacock.

Lord Muruga is the presiding deity of the Tamil language.  Three parts of Sangam literature glorify of Lord Muruga as the Lord of the Tamil language.

The Panchamirtham, a preparation for Lord Muruga’s abishek made of five ingredients is globally famous.  The temple has a golden peacock, the vehicle of Lord Muruga and also a golden car-rath. There is also a winch facility is also made available for the convenience of the devotees.

Interesting practice is that many industrialists and businessmen have Lord Muruga as their partner and pay a share of their profits to him.

Once a mango fruit brought by Maharshi Narada to Kailasa. In the competition with Ganesha to win the Mango,  Child Murugaw was considered lost and left His parents and came to this place. Despite pleadings he was unrelenting and desired to stay here itself.  A temple came into being for Kuzhandai (Child) Velayuthar as He was a child then.

Great woman Tamil poet Avvaiyar, known for her poetic excellence and wisdom, also tried to persuade Murugan but without success. She sang Pazham Nee and the place came to be known as Pazhani.  Pazham in Tamil means fruit and also ripened knowledge.

Idumban was carrying two hills, Shivagiri and Shakti Giri to Pothigai as commanded by Sage Agasthya.  Shivagiri had Lord Shiva attributes and Shaktigiri had that of Mother Parvathi. Halfway as he could not bear the weight, Idumban placed these mounts down here..  Lord Muruga stood on Shaktigiri and refused to come down despite Idumban’s pleadings.   This led to fight and Murugan showered His grace on him and kept with Him.  As Muruga is seen holding a Danda-staff, the Lord came to be known as Dandayuthapani.

When Idumban challenged Muruga when He refused to come down from the Shaktigiri hill, Lord Vinayaka came his rescue.   Vinayaka had a doubt that since he won the Mango race which hurt Muruga and may still be angry with him.  So he took the form of a serpent and fought with Idumban.  This Vinayaka is called Pada Vinayaka and is on the hill path near Idumban shrine with His leg on a serpent.

Before proceeding on the hill, the devotee should worship Vinayaka here while the footprints of Lord Muruga also are behind Vinayaka.

Idumba, with two hills on his shoulders, has his shrine on the hill route and  Abishek is performed at 3.00 a.m. followed by Puja at 5.00 p.m.

Dandam is considered a cane or a tool for punishment.  Lord Muruga explaining the uncertainties of life, stands as a teacher and holds the Danda to correct erring pupils.  His ascetic form is said to teach people to shed the natural evils of greed, lust etc.

Siddha Bogar who was here, made an idol of Navapashana (nine herbals) and installed in the temple.

There is a  parrot on the Danda of Lord Muruga.  There is parrot also in the hands of Mother Meenakshi.  Once there was a wicket poet Sambandandan jealous of saint poet Arunagirinathar and wanted to get rid of him.  He impressed upon King Prapuda Deva Raya to order the saint poet to get the Parijatha flower from heaven to prove his supremacy.  Arunagirinathar flew into the sky in a parrot form leaving his human form in the Tiruvannamalai tower.  When he left his body Sambandandan found the body of the saint and cremated it so that he cannot re-enter into his original body to be his competitor.  When Arunagirinathar was dismayed, Lord Muruga blessed him by having his parrot form in His staff.

Brahmma Theertha is on the north of Palani.  On its bank, the three Lords appear and grace the devotees facing west.

While Aipasi Annabishekam is performed to Lord Shiva only in temples, it is performed to Lord Muruga in Palani on the Jeshta star day in the month of Aani at the midday pujas in the hill temple and on the Moola star day in the same month at the Tiru Aavinankudi Kuzhanthai Velayuthar temple during the evening pujas.  The Annabishekam is performed to Lord Shiva on the Uthrada star day in the Periyavudayar temple.

Uniquely, the doors of the temple are open during eclipse is open as a tradition and  Special abishekam done to the Lord.  Mother Ganga wanted to cleanse Herself of the sins left by those who bathed in the river.  Lord directed Her to pray at a place where even Yama the God of Death was blessed by Him.  Ganga then left just a fraction of her power in the original Ganga and merged with the sacred spring here and the Theertham came to be known as Gupta Ganga and her presence is still believed.

Considered holier than Ganga, it is now known as Muni Theertha and afestival is celebrated during Masi Magam.

Lord Shiva sent Veerabadra to destroy the Daskha’s yagna and also punish those attended.  Sun-Surya who participated lost his shining due to the Lord’s anger and prayed forgiveness. He performed penance here and regained his original form.

When Lord Vishnu desiring (Vaanchai) Mahalakshmi (Sri) sought the help of Lord Shiva to realize His wish, the place came to be known as Sri Vaanchiam.  As Lord Shiva is dominant here, there is no shrine for Navagrahas.  Yama and his assistant Chitra Gupta are in a same shrine and the devotees worship Yama with garlands made of Vada (vada malai).  Longevity homams and birthday Pujas are popular here.  Mother Mahishasuramardhi with Her eight hands bleeses the devotees here.

Yama the God of Death felt very sad that people hate him for his job of taking the life of people while there are pleasant jobs available.  When he prayed to Lord at Tiruvarur, the Lord directed him to pray at Sri Vanchiam.  When Yama performed penance, When the Lord was pleased and appeared before him on the Masi month Bharani Star day in February-March, Yama expressed that his job taking life of people has earned theirr hatred and criticism and causding him to suffer from Brahmmahati dosha.  Lord Shiva then decreed that in future, people would attribute the cause of death due to diseases, age and accidents and no more blame him.  Lord also instructed Yama that he should be lenient to those who are less sinners and they should not have rebirth and in addition make their end peaceful.  In addition He granted him the status of Kshetra Palaka and the devotees would worship him first and then only the Lord and hence the first puja is dedicated to Yama in this temple even today.

Since the Nandhi safeguards as Rishaba Vaahanam, this kshetram help remove the dosha of the people belonging to Rishaba zodiac sign (Kritigai, Rohini and Mrigaseersham stars).

The temple has seen the four yugas and hence the deity is named differently in the yugas legend says that this sacred place has seen all the four yugas.

Kritha Yuga Puraathaneswarar

Tretha Yuga Vilvaaranyeswarar

Dwaapara Yoganandeswarar

kali yuga Sivayoginathar

It is believed that Sage Agasthya worshipped this deity on the Sivarathiri days.  Here Perumal appears as Lakshmi-Narayanan, along with His spouse Lakshmi.  During the fight with Ravana, Jatayu’s feather fell in the ‘Jatayu Theertham’ here.

Bhairavar in this place is called ‘Chaturkaala Bhairavar’ who manifests in different form in the yugas. Near Jnanakaala Bhairavar is Dakshinamoorthi and Mahalakshmi is near Swarnakarshana Bhairavar. Baalasani is in a short distance of Unmaththa Bhairavar and Uththara Kailaaya Lingam is close to Yoga Bhairavar.  To worship them all in the ashtami day is significant..

Lord Brahma, the God of Creation was born as a son among 7 sons to one Vishnu Sharma.  They performed tapas to Lord Siva who, on the Sivarathiri day, appeared before them, made them as seven lights and merged them with Him.  Hence, the deity of this place is  ‘Sivayogi Naathar’ and we can see even today in the body of the Sivalingam seven hair-locks.

Once a person who had committed numerous sins, called out for the Lord in dying moment.  When Lord Siva asked Nandhi to check, Nandhi turned to find out. (Hence the Nandhi here is in the turned posture).  It was a ‘Pratosha Day’ and all his sins vanished when Nandhi set his vision on him.  When Lord Yama came there to end his life, Nandhi stopped him and a quarrel began.  Nandhi won and sent Yama out, away from the flag-post.  Though usually Nandhi will be seen inside the flag-post but here he is outside.

Near the southern temple wall is seen the Sun-Dial fixed some 700 years ago which measures the route of the sun from sunrise to sunset. A semi-circle and the numbers from morning 6.00 to evening 6.00 are carved around with a brass nail in the centre and the fallof sunlight on the nail and number determines the times.

The Lord is a Swayambumurthy.

Once a Chola king had an attack of paralysis and since no doctor was able to cure him, he prayed to the Lord.  An aged couple came to his court and when the king drank the water dissolved with sacred ashes given by them, he was cured and implored upton to stay with him in the court and offered gifts. They declined and finally when requested brought the king to the place where the Linga was lying buried and asked him to build a temple and disappeared.  The king understood that the visitors were but Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi and built the temple.  Lord here is prayed for relief from diseases (Pini) and Gnanasambandar has referred to him as Pini Neekkum Shiva.

Generally, there is only one Ambica in Shiva temples but here there are two Ambica shrines side by side.  During the construction of the temple, when the original Ambica was lost, a new Ambica idol named Arumarunthu Nayaki was made and installed.  Within a few days, the original idol also was found and installed with the name Apoorva Nayaki and remains the main Ambica of the temple.

This is the temple to seek relief from the Karkadaka-Cancer in English and Nandu in Tamil-zodiac sign comprising of three stars-Punarvasu, Poosam and Ayilyam.  The hole on the body of the Linga created by the Nandu and the scar caused by Indira is still visible.  There is a shrine for Moon-Chandra at the entrance of the temple where people pray for problems due to Moon aspects.

Sage Durvasa was engaged in his Shiva Puja when a Gandharva mocked at his old age and crab like walk.  Though sage ignored him,  Yet the Gandharva continued the mockery and beckoned him by clapping hand and imitated by moving before him like a cancer-Nandu.  Angered sage cursed him to be born a Nandu. When he realised his mistake and sought pardon,  He was advised to perform Shiva Puja to gain his original form and came to this place, bathed in the pushkarini, picked up flowers and worshipped the Lord as a Nandu.

Meanwhile, Indira the king of Devas, to acquire a power to conquer the demons, also came to this place, bathed in the pushkarini and did Shiva Puja with 1008 flowers.  To his dismay, Every day he found one flower falling short and saw that the Nandu doing puja with that one flower.  In his usual arrogant way, He thought that no one other than him was the only one worthy of doing Shiva puja and a Nandu was not qualified for the puja and tried to kill it with is sword.  Lord then made a hole in His Linga body to help the creature to escape Indira’s attack.  Yet, the Linga was injured by the sword cut & impact.  Lord appeared before Indira and impressed upon him that one cannot succeed by arrogance but by humility alone.  As Lord granted salvation to Karkadaga-Nandu, He is worshipped as Karkadakeswarar.

Abhishekam with gingelly oil is collected and treated as prasadam

Since a peacock used for the rituals sought asylum of Mother Parvathi and as ignored the Lord’s advice, was cursed to become a peacock.  She, as a peacock, came to this place and performed severe penance to get back Her Lord.   Pleased with Her penance, Lord Shiva appeared before here as a Peacock Himself and danced as a peacock – Mayura Thandavam and hence he is Mayuranathar. .  Mother was restored to Her original form.  .

It is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva Nataraja and Lord Govindaraja Perumal, one of the few temples where both the Shaivite and Vaishnavite deities are enshrined in one place.

An unique feature of this temple is the adorned image of Nataraja. Here Lord Shiva as the Lord of the  Bharatanatyam. The temple is traditionally administered by an endogamous group of shaivite brahmins called Dikshitars, who also officiate as the priests.

Chidambaram is also referred to in various works such as Thillai (after the Thillai forest of yore in which the temple is now located), Perumpatrapuliyur or Vyagrapuram் (in honour of Saint Vyagrapathar). The temple is supposed to be located at the Lotus heart of the Universe": Virat hridaya padma sthalam. On the spot where the Lord displayed his dance of bliss, the Änanda Thaandavam - a spot exactly south of the "Thirumoolataaneswar temple", today is the Ponnambalam/ Porsabai (Pon meaning gold, Ambalam/Sabai meaning stage) housing the Lord Shiva in his dancing form. The Lord is also hence referred to as the Sabhanayakar, meaning the Lord of the Stage.

There is the gold-roofed stage in the sanctum sanctorum and houses the Lord in three forms:

- the anthromorphological form as an appearance of Lord Nataraja, called the Sakala thirumeni.

- the semi-anthropomorphological form as the Crystal linga of Chandramouleswarar, the Sakala nishkala thirumeni.

- as the Space in Chidambara Rahasyam, an empty space within the sanctum sanctorum, the Nishkala thirumeni.

Chidambaram also is one of the Pancha sabhais where Lord Shiva is said to have displayed his dance. The other sabhais have been described in detail in Temples of Tamilnadu -  19 - Pancha Bootha Sthalam

The temple was rebuilt by a chieftain named Valvil Ori ruling Kollimalai noted for his charitable character.  Sometime around the year 1266, Karnataka king Veera Ramanathan donated adequate lands for the maintenance of Pujas in the temple.  Another king Rama Chakravarthi donated more lands to the temple in the year 1541 and some more lands came around1619.

Some of the famous temples of Gunaseelam, Thottiyam, Tiru Engoimalai, Uthamarkoil and Tirunarayanapuram are near this temple.  As the temple is a little away from the main place, visitors should inform the priest in advance to ensure his presence.

All the 27 stars have had a darshan of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvathi in this temple.   Star Revathi continued to worship here praying for the great mercy of the divine parents.  Those who have been named Revathi or belong to Revathi star should make time to worship in this temple or at least on their annual star day and offer to Lord and Mother 27 numbers of any auspicious article as 27 Mangal Sutras,  27 blouse bits or 27 food packets and distribute them to the devotees visiting the temple to realize their wishes in life.  They are also advised to perform milk abishek to Lord before 12 minutes of the beginning of Aswini star till the end of Revathi star. This provides betterment in life for Revathi starrers

Sri Muthukumaraswami Temple  was built by a lady named Thiruvarutchelvar Sivakami Ammaiyar, is closely associated with Lord Muruga and dedicated to Vishaka Nakshathira.  The ruling deities of the Vishaka star are Agni and Indira.

As per the Sthala Purana, once there was only Vel in this temple and the priest used to perform pooja only to it. One day Lord Muruga came in his dream and told him that this hill belonged to Him and that he could find an idol in a place called Kottaithiradu and directed him to the place. The king was informed and when they dug the place, the crowbar touched the nose of the idol and slightly damaged it. Since it added to the beauty of Lord Muruga, He is called the Mookan. The temple was then built by the King.

Sivakami Ammaiyar and her husband Gangaimuthu Devar. They did not have a child and hence worshiped in all the temples for the Child Boon. They started treating all the children of the village as their own. When a Muslim Holy man named Walar Mastan visited their place and Sivakami and Gangaimuthu told Him about their childlessness,he advised them to Adopt Lord Muruga Himself as her son. The couple was unsure and confused.  That night, Lord Muruga appeared as a Child in her dream and asked her to build a temple on the Hill Top..

The couple started to build the temple using the elephants to carry big stone pillars and beams to the hill top. When the elephants carried those pillars and the beams with the help of strong ropes, sometimes the ropes got cut off resulting in the rolling down of the pillars and Sivakami daringly stopped those stones with her head and until they were pulled up again, she used to hold them by her head. It was believed that also used to carry the bricks on her head by placing them on the strip of a plantain stem. We could still see an idol of Sivakami Ammaiyar in the temple.

There are 625 steps to reach the temple and the hill is called Thirikoodamalai. At the entrance of the hill, we have 16 steps to reach  shrine of Lord Shadosa Vinayaka. So the belief is worhsipping the Lord, one can get 16 wealth such as education, courage, material wealth etc represented by 16 steps.

The sacred spring at the top of the hill is called Ashta Padmakulam or Poonjinai. A special flower named Kuvalai (a type of Blue Lotus) blossoms here. IT is unqiue that only one flower would blossom a day.

The next important feature is separate shrine for Sapta Kannikas (Seven Virgins),believed to be seven powers of Parvathi,  who worshiped Lord Muruga all through their life.  Normally found only in the Lord Shiva temple, here these idols are seen installed on the banks of the Poonjinai spring.

It is also believed that the departed ancestors (Pithrus) live on the steps of the hill that lead to the temple and so tarpanamto them in this place is considered to benefit future generations.

Vishaka Nakshathira people should visit this temple at least once in a year or on their birth star days. The letter ‘V’ in Vishakam represents Supremecy and shakam means Light and the Vishakam star has 3 lights in it namely Vimala Shakam, Vibhava Shakam and Vipula Shakam and they are believed to exist in this Hill Temple. So those visit have a positive impact and change in life for the good.

Thirukalukundram a famous hill temple and sangu theertham named after the sacred Eagles who visit every noon at the Hill Temple called Pakshi Theertham. It is also known as the Kaliash of South India. The temple is more than 1500 years old temple. This Temple is considered (virgo)- Kanni Parihara Sthalam. Special Puja is performed to Swamy, Ambal for the persons born in Kanni/ Kanya Rasi or Lagnam. One has to climb 565 steps up the mountain to go to temple.

Lord Sri Vedagiriswarar resides at the top of combination of four Hills - essentially a grouping of the Four Vedas – who requested the Lord to be present on the top and hence called Vedagiriswarar. He has been workshipped by Indra, Thilothamai, a dancer of Indra's court. Garuda, Ashtavasus and many more sacred souls.

Here there is an unique and rare phenomenon of  two eagles appear over the temple during noon to worship the Lord. Then and come down to a rock to accept the sweet rice that is offered. It is believed that the eagles are sons of Brahma who were cursed by Lord Shiva to be born on earth

For redemption from curse they have to workship the deity till the end of Kailyuga. Goind by different names in various yugas they, in Kali Yuga, are known as Pusha & Vidhadha.

The ten acre Bakthavatchalaeswarar Temple with four majestic gopurams, architecture, Mandapams and huge compound wall situated near by is surrounded by many Theerthams. Goddess Thirupursundari Amman has a separate shrine

The belief that Indira still worships Lord in this temple is further strengthened by that fact that thunder falls through a hole in the tower above the sanctum sanctorum (Vimana) and goes around the Shivalinga. The sanctum experiences scorching heat.  This happens rarely and it happened last time on the 10th November, 1930.

Sage Markandeya performed pooja to Lord when a conch appeared in the abishekham water. The theertha is praised as Markandeya theertha and it produces a conch even now once in 12 years. The 12 theerthas-sacred springs-around the hill are 1) Indira, 2) Shambu, 3) Rudra, 4) Vasishta, 5) Meignana-true wisdom. 6) Agasthya, 7) Markandeya, 8) Kausika, 9) Nandhi, 10) Varuna, 11) Akalika and 12) Pakshi theerthas.

Two sages Poosha and Vruddha performed penance on Lord Shiva seeking Sharoopa status but was  granted the Sayujya status with the promise of elevation later. When the sages adamantly refused Lord cursed them to become eagles. Since then they are in this hill known as Shambu and Aadhi and they worship the Lord with the Pakshi Theertha they had created. It is a belief that these eagles use bathe in Rameswaram, eat in Kazhukundram and stay at Kasi each day. King Suraguru, who had the darshan of the Lord, created this sacred place.

It is one of the Pancha Bootha sthalams known for the worship of Lord Shiva representing the element of water (appulinga).

An Elephant was blessed here after and hence this temple came to be known as ‘Thiruvanaikka’. Lord Siva is seated below Jambu tree at this temple, Hence its name Jambukeswaram. Mother Ahilandeswari penance here was blessed by Lord Shiva here and hence this temple is also known as Gnanashethram. Kochengat cholan, who constructed this temple more than 2500 years ago and who as a spider worshipped Lord Jambukeswarar in its previous life, was blessed to be born as a king in its next birth.

Thirugnana Sambanthar, Appar, Sundarar, Arunagirinathar, Iyyadigal kadawarkon, Thayumanavar have enchanted the glory of Lord Jambukeswarar in theirliterary works. Goddess blessed poet Kalamega Pulavar with the talent to write poems at this temple.

This temple has with 5 corridors and since Lord Siva himself built the 5th praharam, appearing in the form of Spider, it is known as ‘Thiruneettan thirumathil’. He blessed a spider and elephant to attain moksha here.

Brahmma once incurred Sthree Dosha by falling in love with a woman he created.  To Provide relief to Brahmma Lord left Mount Kailas and Mother Ambica wanted to accompany Him.  When Lord advised Her to stay back considering Brahma’s weakness,  Mother suggested that She would take His form and Lord may follow in Hers. This event proves the philosophy that Lord and Mother are but one.  They granted darshan and pardon to Brahmma .

During the Brahmmotsavam this event is celebrated on the banks of Brahmma Theertham.  As it is time of Brahmma’s prayer to Lord and mother, no hymn music is played.

It is said that Ambica performs puja to Lord during middays. Hence the priest performing puja to Mother at this time, is dressed in sari, with the crown of Ambica, with music playing to perform the midday puja thus signifying that Ambica Herself prays to Lord.  He then performs abishek to Lord and Gomatha (cow) and returns to Ambica shrine.  At this time the priest is considered as Ambica Herself.

During Aadi Friday, the temple is open from 2.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and the Mother graces as Mahalakshmi in the morning, as Parvathi in the afternoon and as Saraswathi in the evening.  As Lord is a teacher-Guru and Mother a student in the place, there are more student devotees in the temple.

There are no doors in the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Jambukeswara but a stone window with nine holes, representing the nine holes in the body, through which he will be worshipped. Here the traditional Annabishek is performed on the full moon day in Vaikasi-May-June and the Lord is covered with sacred ash.   The perennial spring in this shrine will have more water in the sanctum in the rainy season in Aipasi-October-November.

A Chola king while constructing the fifth corridor-prakara of the temple, had to to go for to war to fight his enemy when his mind was in the temple construction and with the Lord.  Lord Shiva came to the place in the guise of Vibhuti Chitthar and completed the work which has since been named Vibhuti Prakara and the walls around as Tiruneetran Tirumadhil.  Sacred ash is Vibhuti in Sanskrit, Tiruneeru in Tamil and Madhil is wall in Tamil.  There is a shrine for Vibhuti Chitthar on the banks of Brahmma Theertha.

There was a time when Mother Ambica was in a frurious form.  Normally installing a srichakra is believed to control the fury. Jagadguru Shankaracharya made two ear rings, applied the Sri Chakra power on them and adorned Ambica with them  Mother became all merciful and smiling to devotees.  He also installed Her sons Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga before Her as a Mother can never be angry when she sees her kids.

Two Shiva Ganas Pushpadanda and Maliavan began to fight with each other to decide their rank in the service of Lord and they ended cursing each other to be born as a spider and elephant.  Maliavan became the spider and Pushpadanda the elephant.  Both prayed here for relief but not without fighting each other.  The spider entered into the ear of the elephant and killed it.  Lord Shiva granted salvation to elephant only and made the spider to be born again for its attempt to murder.

Spider was born to Chola king Subaveda and queen Kamalavathi as Kochengat Chozhan.  He built Mada temples to Lord Shiva and renovated in such a way that elephants cannot enter.

It should be noted that the Wedding Festival (Thiru Kalyanam) is not celebrated in the temple.  Lord Shiva granted darshan to Ambica when She was in penance here but did not marry Her.  Hence no Palli Arai Puja even though it exists.  Lord Chokkanatha and Mother Meenakshi in the temple are taken to this shrine at nights.  No wedding festival is celebrated for other deities too in the temple.

When a Brahmin prayed to Mother Akhilandeswari to bless him to become a noted poet, she appeared before him as an ordinary woman chewing betel leaves.  When She asked him if she could spit the betel juice in his mouth,  The Brahmin grew angry.  At that time, another devotee, Varadhan came to the temple and when mother asked him,  He gladly said that she can very well do it and opened his mouth.  He became the celebrated poet Kalamegam in later days.  Based on this event, those ambitious of becoming scholars, offer Thamboolam (betel and nuts) as nivedhana to Mother.

Saint Arunagiriar prayed to Him that he should be protected from thoughts of lust. Lord Muruga appears furious on the banks of Jambu Theertha with a demon under His feet with the demon personifying lust.  This is a very rare form of Lord Muruga.

nd also Bhairava.  The power of his penance was in his  palms and was considered the authority for all Akshada angels flying in the air with garlands. Based on this, The custom of printing wedding invitation with the pictures of deities came into practice.  It is believed that the Rishi prays for the marrying couple in this temple invisibly.

After his bath in the Chandra Pushkarini and worship of Gnanapureeswarar and Pushpavalli,  Lord appeared before him and restored his hands.  Since the hands were cut here, the place is called Korakkai and as the Siddha worshipped with short hands (after being cut), it is called Kurukkai.  Over a period of time, it became Korukkai.

Lord Vishnu redemmed the vedas from the two demons Madhu and Kaidapa who stole from Brahma and hid them under the sea.   Yet when Brahma could not perform His creation job efficiently, on Lord Vishnu’s advice, Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva here and regained his Gnana-wisdom on  Avittam star day in the month of Aavani and resumed His creation job efficiently.  As the Lord imparted Gnana to Brahma, he is praised as Gnanapureeswarar.

Lord Dakshinamurthy has a significant importance in the temple.

Those afflicted with snake planet aspects, suffering from unknown fear and confusion, removal of obstacles in marriage and achieving excellence in academic field pray to Lord Vinayaka

Special poojas are conducted in the temple for Guru Dakshinamurthy on Thursday in the month of Masi. (February-March) considered important for worship. Married women change their Mangalsutra thread and ones with auspicious Guru-Jupiter aspects are blessed with long married life.

As there is no exclusive Jupiter shrine here, Lord Dakshminamurthy, the authority for the planet is worshipped very devotionally here. Dakshinamurthy graces here with four Sanakathi rishis.

Alangudian is the name given to Lord shiva as drank the Aalam poison when the ocean of milk was churned and the place is known as Alangudi

It is a firm belief that none gets affected by any poison in this place. In addition, since the holy tree is the black poolai plant, the place is named Tiruirumpoolai besides the name of Alangudi.

Alangudi is regarded as one of the Pancha Aranya Sthalas  (Pancha-five, Aranya-forest covered). This is one of the many subsidiary temples attributed to Tiruvidaimarudur. The unique feature here is Lord Dakshinamurthy is taken in car procession.

Sundarar: The small idol appearing a bit damaged, was taken to Tiruvarur once by a king. While brought back to Alangudi by a priest, to avoid the constables on the way, the priest told them that he was taking his child suffering from measles. to his surprise when the priest unfolded the idol after reaching the Alangudi temple, he found small-pox scars on the idol which are visible even today.

Here Friday (Sukravar) is attributed to the worship of Mother-Goddess and hence bears the name Sukravara Ambica.

It is significant in the temple that the structure reinforces the Matha (Mother) Pitha (Father) and Guru (Teacher) philosophy. Entering the temple, we meet Mother-Ambica Shrine first, followed by the presiding deity and then the Guru-Dakshinamurthy.

When saint Sundarar was caught in the floods while coming to Alangudi, Lord Shiva Himself came to his rescue in a boat and Lord Vinayaka protected the boat from capsizing and therefore came to be known as Kalangamal Katha Vinayaka (Vinayaka who protected from fear of boat capsize).

Chaturkaala Bhairavar   :   Bhairavar in this place is called ‘Chaturkaala Bhairavar’ who manifests in different form in the yugas.

About a few centuries ago, Sridhara Ayyaavaal was performing the annual Divasam ritual for his ancestors. A person came begging for alms but as per tradition, though alms should not be given at that time,, he offered food.  It lead to the village people banish him from the village and mandated that to absolve this sin, he should take bath in the Ganga.  When Sridhara Ayyaavaal prayed to the Lord, Ganga flowed in his house well.

A king from Kerala had illicit relation with lot of women and also tortured and cheated many of them. At one stage, the king wanted to reform and was advised to visit Thiruvisainallur, have a dip in river Cauvery and worshipped the Lord to get rid of his curse. Hence it is believed that whoever incurs curse of women, get relief if they repent and visit the temple.

Near the southern temple wall is seen the Sun-Dial fixed some 700 years ago. This clock’s construction is such that it measures the route of the sun from sunrise to sunset. We find a  semi-circle made and the numbers from morning 6.00 to evening 6.00 are carved around with a brass nail in the centre. Falling of sunlight on the nail and number determines the times. A Master piece to show the expertise of the Tamils  in the Astronomical Science.
