Sumangali Pujas by woman in this temple for timely marriage is well known
Like Sri Meenakshi in Madurai, Mother Tungabalasthanambikai with Neelothpal flower, discus and conch in other hands, also holds a parrot called Vedamirt Keeram. It is believed that the parrot is Lord Shiva and chants Vedas. Rishis Veda Vyasa and Sukabrahmma have worshipped Mother in this temple. A darshan of this parrot on Fridays or on the star days is believed to bless the woman with a good married life.
When the sages and Devas appealed for protection from Padmasura and singamukha to Mother Parvathi who in turn prayed to Lord Shiva who was in Katrajyothi yoga which is a light in fire form yoga. Katra Sundareswarar (Karthika Sundareswarar) opened His eyes from where came out six sparks, which united and became Karthikeya. It is believed that Lord Muruga was given birth here. Kanchana prakasa, the golden light, appeared from the Lord, thus giving the place the name Kanchana Nagar which over a period of time became Kanja Nagar meaning Golden town. Karthika Sundareswarar means the deity producing six sparks. Hence the shrine is attributed to Krithikai star.
