Sri Ramanathaswami Temple is a dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Rameswararm of Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Ramanathaswamy/ Ramalingeswarar and Mother is Sri Parvada Vardhini. This Temple is considered as Mesham (Aries) Parihara Sthalam.
Rama worshipped Shiva in the form of a Shiva Lingam made of earth by Sita, while returning to Ayodhya. Hanuman was entrusted with the task of bringing an image of Sri. Viswanathar from Benares. Anticipating delay in Hanuman's return, Rama offered worship at a pre-chosen auspicious moment to a Shivalingam fashioned out of earth by Sita called Ramalingam and the town is known as Rameswaram. The other Shivalingam here – Viswanathar was said to have been brought by Hanuman from Banares and is referred as Kasilingam and Hanumalingam. Prayers are offered to Viswanathar before they are offered to Ramanathaswamy. It is believed that Rama worshipped Tilakeswarar at Devipatnam enroute to Sri Lanka.
