The temple is considered to be of more than 1000 years old. Lord Rama before his departure to Sri Lanka for the battle with Ravana prayed here for his victory and easy passage over the sea to. Goddess Durga who with her powers calmed down the sea and made it easier to build a bridge over it. At this time Lord Rama also installed nine vertical stones that represent the nine planets and worshipped them so that the voyage is successful. These stones are still visible in the calm sea. He also worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple with ‘el” a variety of millet.

People come here to perform religious rites for their forefathers.  The shrine has a beautiful image of an eight-armed Durga with weapons. Devotees offer nine varieties of grains including paddy, wheat, pulses and other things to the Gods and Goddesses.

It is believed that, the name Devipatnam arose from the belief that Devi (Parvati) founded this site to commemorate her destruction of the demon Mahisasuran.
