When Lord Shiva and Mother Kali entered into a dancing contest and Lord Shiva dancing his Ugra Thandava raised His legs upward at a stage while Kali restricted by her natural feminine qualities, did not. when Lord Brahmma appeared and praised Kali, as Veda Nayaki and calmed her down, she responded to the prayer and granted darshan as Brahmma Chamundeeswari. An idol is in this form was installed in the temple.
During a debate arose, Mother Parvathi refused to accept that Lord Shiva was more Powerful. Shiva angered, cursed Her to become an Ugrakali. When she asked for a liberation from the curse, the Lord said that when the Devas and human will be subjected to the atrocities of demons, she, as Ugra Kali will destroy the demons to protect Devas and men and then perform a penance on him at Thillai. She then joined him as Sivakami when he granted Ananda dance darshan to Sages Patanjali and Vyakrapada.
